Vince Palazzolo of Colts Neck won the 93rd NJSGA William Y. Dear Junior Championship on Thursday, July 24, at Suburban Golf Club in Union, defeating state scholastic champion Mike Graboyes of Twin Brooks. Thirteen-year-old J.D. Driscoll of Arcola won the 44th Boys Championship.
With two birdies and a par, Driscoll extended his lead over Mooney by 3 holes after 9-holes. Driscoll beat Garrett Mooney with pars on the 11th, 12th and 13th holes. Driscoll surpassed top-seeded Jimmy Criscione of Paramus in the Boys semifinals.
Shooting a 5-under par through 12th holes, a par on the 13th hole gave Palazzolo a 5-shot lead on his way to a victory over Graboyes.
Palazzolo, 17, was runner-up in the Met Boys championship in 2011. Next week, he will play in the Carter Cup matches at Baltusrol and has been selected to compete in the 18-and-under Willianson Cup at Laval sur le Lac Club in Quebec next month. Beginning August 5, he will also play in the 46th Trusted Choice Big “I” National Championship at the Pete Dye Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia.
