New Jersey native and current PGA Tour member Morgan Hoffmann began his play in the 2015 Open Championship in St. Andrews with an opening-round 1-over par, 73, sliding him into a crowded tie for 92nd place midway through the first day.
Despite a double bogey on the second hole, Hoffmann found early success on the front nine Thursday, shooting 1-under par with three birdies. Over the final nine holes though, the 25-year-old tallied two bogies and no birdies.
Dustin Johnson currently leads the tournament at 7-under, while six golfers trail by a single shot. Jordan Spieth, looking to continue his pursuit toward a 2015 Grand Slam, stands just behind at -5 — tied for eighth.
Hoffmann is currently ranked 91st in the Official World Golf Ranking and 72nd in the 2015 FedEx Cup standings. In his last Major appearance in June’s U.S. Open, Hoffmann finished in a tie for 27th (+5).
Hoffmann will tee off for his second round at St. Andrews early Friday morning at 1:54 a.m. EST. He will once again be grouped with Danny Lee and Soren Kjeldsen.
