After day one of the four-day Senior British Open Championship in Berkshire, England, New Jersey’s Jim McGovern sits five shots back of the lead at an even par. His round score of 70 places him in a crowded tie for 52nd along with 22 other golfers.
McGovern (White Beeches GCC) started the day with a birdie before recording two bogeys to finish the front nine at 1-over. He then made par on eight of the final nine rounds, and behind a 14th hole birdie, returned to even.
McGovern’s overseas trip marks his third Senior Match play appearance of the season, following his victory in the inaugural NJPGA Senior Match Play Championship and his appearance in the U.S. Senior Open in Sacramento, California. In the latter event, McGovern fell short of the 36-hole cutline on day two.
Entering Friday’s second round, eight players lead the Championship at 5-under, while 31 total golfers sit under par.
