Jay Blumenfeld of Mountain Ridge won the 56th NJSGA Senior Amateur Championship on Tuesday, July 29 at the 6,370-yard Deal Golf and Country Club. The two-time runner-up lead the first-round with a 2-under-par 69, then shot a 4-over-par 75 for a total of 144. Blumenfeld took first, by two shots over defending five-time champion Allan Small of Fairmount who shot 72-74-146.
In 2013, Blumenfeld was runner-up to Small, whom he has known since high school. Blumenfeld also gave up first to Tom DiiCinti of Centerton in 2010. Blumenfeld is a 23-time club champion at Mountain Ridge and was NJSGA Amateur Player of the Year in 2006 and 2009. The 62-year-old will play in his eighth British Senior Amateur this weekend. This past May, Blumenfeld won the Met Senior Amateur for the second time.
Blumenfeld seemed to have secured first place with even par, until he shot a double bogey on the 15th hole, ending up in the hazard. He recovered with pars on the 17th and final holes, putting him at 4-over par and 2-over Small for the win. Three golfers tied for third place with a score of 147: Bill Snouffer of Panther Valley (73-74), Jon Tingley of Stanton Ridge (73-74) and Billy Charpek of Navesink (72-75).
