At only 19 years old, Max Greyserman topped experienced competition to win the 94th New Jersey State Open Championship on Thursday, July 17. Greyserman of Crestmont Country Club ended the tournament at 6-under-par-207, winning in dramatic fashion. The rising Duke University sophomore is one of the youngest to ever win the State Open and only the 10th amateur to win the event.
Among the tough competition that he faced were big names such as Frank Esposito of Brooklake and Mike Stamberger of Spring Lake. Greyserman went back and forth with Esposito throughout the day, both vying for the title. A couple of mistakes by Esposito allowed Greyserman to catch up and take the lead. Esposito inevitably tied with Stamberger for second place, finishing three shots behind Greyserman. Jim McGovern of White Beeches and Craig Smith formerly of Trump National-Bedminster finished even at 4th place at 71-211.
7/16/14 2:30 p.m. – Max Greyserman (Crestmont CC) is currently tied with Day 1 leader Brett Jones (Mountain Ridge CC) for the lead, as Day 2 of the 94th NJSGA Open Championship at Essex County Country Club reaches its midpoint after weather delays this morning. Both Greyserman and Jones sit at 5-under par for the day as they prepare to tee off on the back nine this afternoon.
7/15/2014 6:00 p.m. – Brett Jones (Mountain Ridge CC) shot an opening round 66 at the 94th NJSGA Open Championship currently being held at Essex County Country Club through Thursday, July 17. Jones was one of the lucky ones, getting a full round in before a summer storm suspended play at 5:14 p.m. Jones had a bogey-free round that included two consecutive birdies on the par-5 7th and 8th holes.
Trailing Jones by one stroke is Frank Esposito (Brooklake CC) who also completed his round before play was suspended. The PGA major bound Esposito almost had as many birdies (7) as he did pars (8).
The 94th edition of the NJSGA Open Championship is being held at Essex County Country Club in West Orange, New Jersey. The golf course is the oldest in New Jersey and the 6th oldest in the country.
There is currently no word on when play will resume.
